Decadent dark chocolate brownies with black sesame butter. Sweetened with unrefined coconut sugar and frosted with an oil-free black sesame cacao frosting.
Hey, there.
What’s new?
We’re about to leave for Expo West tomorrow and so far I’ve only managed to pack my luggage full of snacks!
Before I rush to the west coast and T-shirt weather I want to leave you with something sweet.
Black Sesame Butter Brownies is the plant-based dessert you’ve been waiting for before you knew you were waiting.
This super fudgy stack can be on your table tonight for dessert with only 1- bowl and 20 minutes in the oven!
You’ve Got to Try Black Sesame Butter
My tahini obsession is no secret.
When I found out that Eden Foods was launching a new Black Sesame Butter along with a new Tahini I was seriously excited.
I mean, just look at that drizzle!
This creamy dreamy butter is black as night because it’s made with unhulled roasted black sesame seeds.
It boasts some major amino acids, healthy fats, and calcium content.
You can use it anywhere you might use regular tahini; toast, sauces, and of course, baking.
In this recipe, the use of black sesame butter makes these brownies super moist and fudgy without any added oils!
Black Sesame + Chocolate = Amazing
I asked you guys on Instagram what you wanted to see more of for March, and you said SWEET!
Bless you.
My taste-buds are usually more into savory than sweet, but there is something about the process of baking that is SO therapeutic to me.
They say baking is a science and cooking is an art, yes?
Well, sometimes science isn’t so bad.
I love the process of following steps knowing you’ll be greeted with a sweet outcome.
The aromatic smell of black sesame butter and chocolate baking isn’t so bad, either.
What You Need to Make Black Sesame Butter Brownies
I experimented with a tahini brownie recipe over a year ago.
The brownies tasted amazing but I never ended up sharing: how selfish of me!
When I opened this beautiful butter from Eden Foods I instantly had visions of sultry black sesame butter brownies stacked high.
I love the way the black sesame butter deepens the rich caca in both color and flavor!
Roasted sesame pairs perfectly with bittersweet chocolate to make an intense chocolatey treat.
Here’s what you need:
- Black Sesame Butter
- unrefined coconut sugar
- oat flour
- cacao powder
- baking powder
- unsweetened almond milk
- maple syrup
That’s it!
How to Serve Black Sesame Butter Brownies
Enjoy these Black Sesame Butter Brownies whenever you want a decadent plant-based dessert.
They’re absolutely perfect warm with a tall glass of almond milk.
The hardest part of this recipes is waiting to cut them into squares.
If you’re impatient like me, lift the parchment from the baking pan and transfer the brownie block to a cooling rack to release heat faster.
You can also pop it in the fridge to speed things up!
I created a 3-ingredient sesame cacao frosting with the black sesame butter if you’d like your brownies with an optional extra layer of sweet black sesame deliciousness.

Black Sesame Butter Brownies
- Total Time: 40 mins
- Yield: 9-12 brownies
- Diet: Vegan
Description
Decadent dark chocolate brownies with black sesame butter. Sweetened with unrefined coconut sugar and frosted with an oil-free black sesame cacao frosting.
Ingredients
Black Sesame Butter Brownies
- 1/2 heaping cup Eden Foods Black Sesame Butter (or sub regular tahini)
- 1 cup unrefined coconut sugar (use 3/4 cup if you like darker chocolate!)
- 1 1/4 cup oat flour (or sub another gluten-free flour of choice with varied results)
- 1/4 cup raw cacao powder
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
Black Sesame Butter Frosting
- 2 TBSP maple syrup
- 2 TBSP raw cacao powder
- 2 TBSP Eden Foods Black Sesame Butter (or sub regular tahini)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a square 8 x 8 pan with parchment paper.
- Add all of the ingredients to a large mixing bowl and mix with a fork until the batter is well combined. The finished product should be thick and moist, not dry and crumbling. If your dough is dry, add 1-2 Tablespoons more almond milk or black sesame butter and recombine. Start with 1 Tablespoon and add more if needed.
- Spoon the dough into the parchment lined pan and smooth it into an even layer with your hands or a spatula.
- Bake the pan for 18-20 minutes, or until the edges start to pull from the pan and the surface starts to split and brown.
- Remove the brownies from the oven and allow them to cool completely before frosting.
- While the brownies are cooling, create your frosting (optional) by whisking together the maple syrup, raw cacao powder, and black sesame butter until smooth.
- Once the brownies have cooled, frost them with a thin layer of the black sesame cacao frosting and cut them into squares. Store any leftover brownies in the refrigerator for 5-7 days and freeze for longterm storage.

Hi, these look decadent! Can you use anything besides coconut sugar like honey or date purée?
Hi Reena! I haven’t tested a liquid sweetener here. I think maple syrup or date paste would work, but it may change the consistency slightly. Let me know if you try it and how it goes! Maple sugar would be a great alternative, too!

I’m allergic to chocolate so I made these with carob powder and they turned out lovely. I can’t wait to pair them with some vegan ice cream. Thank you so much for the recipe!
Hi Kayla! Omg, I LOVE that you made these with carob instead! I’ve yet to post a carob recipe to blog but I feel like I need to! These with ice cream sound SO GOOD for summer! 🙂

Hi Laura… can regular sugar be substituted??
I am on a low FODMAP diet and sugar is an acceptable food.
Hi Joan,
You can try substituting the sugar for another to meet your dietary needs. Let me know how it turns out!
Best,
Lauren
Is black sesame butter the same as black sesame paste?
Hi Silvia,
Most likely very similar. What is the consistency on your sesame paste?
XOXO Lauren
Looks delicious!! Minor but unfortunate typo 😀
I love the way the black sesame butter deepens the rich ^caca^ in both color and flavor!
