Chocolate Cherry Overnight Oats with dark chocolate and fresh or frozen cherries. Perfect for a healthy grab and go breakfast for the week.
I come from a long line of oat-eaters.
I’ve known for a while that my mom eats them almost every morning.
Then, when I was recently in North Carolina visiting extended family, I realized that the oat-love extends to my aunts and uncles, too!
We sat around the table and comparing notes on how we take our morning bowl of oats.
It’s actually comical how similar our tastes are, miles apart and without familial influence.
We all love texture– all the nuts, seeds, berries, and nut butter.
Some of them are even on the overnight oats bandwagon, or, ONOs, as I fondly refer to them.
So, how do you take your oats?
I’ll have to ask my family if they’ve ever thrown in chocolate and cherries– which is my current favorite combination.
These Chocolate Cherry Overnight Oats are made with dark chocolate and fresh or frozen cherries.
They’re perfect for a healthy grab and go breakfast for the week!
An Ode to Cherry Season
I created this recipe on a week when we had a *huge* bag of cherries in the refrigerator!
We had just been visiting Germany, where it was cherry season, and I was newly cherry obsessed and missing M’s cherry tree in his backyard garden.
So, I made these Chocolate Cherry Overnight Oats.
They have a dessert-for-breakfast feel but are packed with plant-based protein, fiber, and healthy fats.
I love them for an easy and decadent start to the day!
What You Need to Make Chocolate Cherry Overnight Oats
Here’s what you need to make Chocolate Cherry Overnight Oats:
- fresh or frozen dark sweet cherries
- plant-based chocolate protein powder
- raw cacao powder
- pure maple syrup
- unsweetened almond milk
- gluten-free old-fashioned rolled oats
- chia seeds
That’s it!
How to Make the Chocolate Cherry Purée
The first step to this recipe is to make a chocolate cherry purée.
You can use fresh or frozen dark sweet cherries for this recipe.
Just make sure the cherries that you use are pitted!
Add the fresh or frozen cherries, chocolate protein powder, cacao powder, maple syrup, and unsweetened almond milk to a high-speed blender or food processor and blend until it’s smooth and creamy.
Divide the blender liquid between two mason jars.

Next, add in the oats!
Divide the oats and chia seeds between the mason jars and stir to combine.
You want to make sure all of the oats are well coated in the chocolate cherry purée.
Cover the jars and transfer them to the refrigerator overnight or for at least 4 hours.
The refrigerator will take care of the rest!
Test and Serve
In the morning, uncover the overnight oats and test the consistency.
If the overnight oats need a little more liquid, add a splash of almond milk and stir them before serving.
And don’t forget to add all of the chocolate cherry toppings!
I recommend fresh sliced cherries, vegan dark chocolate chips, Chocolate SunButter, and your favorite granola.
Chocolate SunButter
If you haven’t tried Chocolate SunButter yet, it’s a deliciously creamy blend of rich cocoa and sunflower seed butter.
It tastes like a thick creamy chocolate frosting that is naturally nutritious.
Each serving only has 4g of sugar, 6g of plant-based protein, and is free from the Top 8 Allergens.
A spoonful is the perfect topping to enhance these Chocolate Cherry Overnight Oats!
I like to get a little bit with every spoonful.
How to Serve Chocolate Cherry Overnight Oats
Enjoy these Chocolate Cherry Overnight Oats as a delicious meal-prepped breakfast.
The leftover overnight oats will keep in the refrigerator for up to one week.
I like to double or triple the recipe to have Chocolate Cherry Overnight Oats for days!
I kept this recipe lightly sweetened with maple syrup.
You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less syrup!
I recommend waiting until the day of to add your toppings so they stay fresh and crispy.
Enjoy!
