Chocolate chai latte with creamy coconut milk, dark chocolate, cinnamon, and ginger lightly sweetened with maple syrup. Perfect to unwind in the evening!
These past few weeks I’ve implemented a nightly tea time ritual.
I start boiling the water while working my way through the dishes and by the time the drying rack is full the kettle is whistling wildly.
My go-to lately is chai tea and M is all about the chamomile.
I let the tea steep for 11 minutes (yes, 11 minutes!), then curl up on the couch to watch The Mandalorian on Disney+.
On one fortuitous evening, I decided to eat a few squares of dark chocolate while drinking my tea.
I gingerly bit off a piece of dark chocolate then took a sip of chai.
The chocolate melted on my tongue instantly, washed down in a wave of warm cinnamon and spices.
Oh my gosh, you guys, it’s amazing.
“This is *so* good,” I told M between greedy slurps, wondering why I’d never thought to pair dark chocolate and chai together before.
So, naturally, I had to combine them in this Dark Chocolate Chai Latte.
Have your chocolate and chai at the same time in this delicious refined-sugar-free cozy drink!
If you’re wondering if this recipe is literally putting chocolate in your mouth while drinking hot tea, guess again.
It’s a *little* more complex than that.
It does, however, involve melting chocolate in chai.
Or, steeping chai in chocolate, really.
Either way, it’s a cozy sweet and spicy beverage that’s perfect to unwind with after a long day.
Here’s what you need:
- unsweetened coconut milk
- pure maple syrup
- Endangered Species Oat Milk Sea Salt & Dark Chocolate
- fresh ginger
- cinnamon stick
- filtered water
- chai tea bags
That’s it!
Add all the ingredients except the tea bags to a large stock pot on the stove.
Pour in the unsweetened coconut milk, pure maple syrup, dark chocolate, fresh ginger, cinnamon stick, and filtered water.
I recommend using coconut milk for this recipe for the creamiest consistency.
The mild sweetness of the coconut pairs perfectly with the chai and chocolate!
If you don’t have coconut milk, try using unsweetened almond milk instead.
Bring the mixture to a low boil over medium-high heat, stirring it occasionally until the chocolate is totally molten and melted.
I used Endangered Species Oat Milk Sea Salt & Dark Chocolate to make these Dark Chocolate Chai Lattes!
These new oat milk bars are awesome because they’re totally dairy-free and lower in sugar with simple ingredients.
This richly dark and surprisingly sweet bar is the perfect blend of bold cacao flavor balanced by the silky-smooth taste of oat milk.
It has just a pinch of sea salt for an extra satisfying finish to draw out the sweetness.
This bold chocolate pairs perfectly with chai tea in these cozy lattes!
Once the chocolate is completely melted, add in the chai tea bags.
Cover the pot and reduce the heat to low and simmer it for about ten minutes.
During this time, be sure to watch the pot carefully to make sure that it doesn’t boil over!
After 10 minutes, remove the pot from the heat and pour the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve over the top of a wide-mouthed pitcher, or a large heat-proof bowl.
If you don’t have a pitcher or large bowl you can also strain the mixture directly into two mugs.
Serve the mugs immediately while they’re warm!
Enjoy this Dark Chocolate Chai Latte on a cold day, snow day, or any day you need to be warmed from the inside out.
To make even more mugs, try doubling or tripling the recipe for more sippers.
I topped my mugs with ground cinnamon for aesthetics and a little extra spice.
Some other ideas are vegan whipped cream, date caramel, or cinnamon sticks.
Enjoy!
