Butternut squash “fries” seasoned with turmeric and cumin with a sesame seed twist! Bake a pan for a healthy snack or side paired with your favorite dip.
Let’s commiserate on cold weather for a minute, because it’s cold here in Virginia and I’m cold right along with it.
My townhouse isn’t well insulated and when I open the cabinets and dishwasher a rush of cold air hit me and the dishes I remove are icy cold and uninviting to the touch.
So I blast the temperature on my Nest thermostat up up up in hopes that the bottom two floors defrost while the top floor rests at a balmy eighty degrees.
Are you chilly too?
I love the changing seasons, but colder weather has never really been my cup of tea.
It requires so much work, you know?
All of the layers, heavy socks, and moisturizer — bonus points if you get a little Vitamin D for the day.
Anyway, I’ve got a recipe today that will warm your house and your heart and your insides.
These Golden Sesame Squash Fries are oven-baked with warm turmeric and a crunchy seeded exterior!
Open, sesame.
These fries are older than Flora & Vino, LLC is.
They first made an appearance on my Instagram feed nearly two years ago, back when Flora & Vino wasn’t “officially” a business yet and I was still working a 9-5 and hustling on the side.
I loved when I got off work early on Fridays and could rush home to make a pan of “fries” to properly celebrate “fry-day”.
The inspiration for these Golden Sesame Squash Fries came from The No Meat Athlete Cookbook.
Whenever a fry recipe is published in a cookbook, I have to get a little bit excited, because fries are kind of my thing.
If you’ve been around here for a while you know that I’ve made quite a few over the years– check out the fry archives if you don’t believe me.
So you might have tried making your own sweet potato fries, or regular fries– but have you ever tried making squash fries?
My local Whole Foods sells pre-packaged crinkle-cut butternut squash and sweet potato “fries” in the produce section.
I recommend grabbing one or two for this recipe, if you can!
If not, you can totally peel and slice a b-nut squash yourself, much like you would in my sweet potato fry recipe.
No squash skins in this recipe, though, friends.
This recipe came about on a Friday afternoon two years ago when I had a couple of containers of crinkle cut Butternut squash in the fridge.
You’re going to love the flavor of warm turmeric and cumin paired with sweet roasted butternut squash and a sesame seed finish!
Here’s what you need to make your own golden squash fries:
- pre-cut Butternut squash crinkle cut “fries”
- ground turmeric
- ground cumin
- garlic powder
- Himalayan sea salt
- black pepper
- avocado oil
- white sesame seeds
The recipe is simple– add the pre-cut squash fries to a large bowl with the spices and optional oil and toss toss toss until the fries are well coated.
If you’re oil-free you can omit the oil for this recipe, but note that the oil does help spread the spices and ensure the sesame seeds stick!
Then we bake them for ~30 minutes until they’re golden brown and slightly crispy on the edges.
Mmm.
These Golden Sesame Squash Fries aren’t just for fry-day!
Bake a pan of them for a cozy afternoon snack or side dish to your plant-based main dish.
I think it would be a great way to get the kids to eat their veggies in “fry” form!
If you’re not into turmeric, try the recipe with less or omit altogether for a not as yellow but still golden butternut squash fry.
Can’t find butternut squash fries anywhere and don’t feel like peeling, slicing, and dicing yourself?
That’s OK– you can also try this fry recipe with sweet potato or regular potato wedges, too.
Try serving the fries with your favorite dip– I love plain ketchup, hummus, or hot sauce.
Enjoy!

Golden Sesame Squash Fries
- Total Time: 40 minutes
Description
Butternut squash “fries” seasoned with turmeric and cumin with a sesame seed twist! Bake a pan for a healthy snack or side paired with your favorite dip.
Ingredients
- 1 package of pre-cut Butternut squash crinkle cut “fries” (I found mine at Whole Foods!), or peel and slice your own Butternut squash into “fries”
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1/2 tsp ground cumin
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- pinch of Himalayan sea salt
- pinch of black pepper
- 1 TBSP avocado oil*
- 2 TBSP white sesame seeds
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Add the turmeric, cumin , garlic powder, Himalayan sea salt, and black pepper to the bottom of a large mixing bowl and toss to combine.
- Remove butternut squash from the packaging, or, alternatively, create your own by peeling and slicing your own butternut squash into “fry” shapes.
- Add the butternut squash to the large bowl with the spices along with the avocado oil and toss with a large spoon to combine. At first the mixture will feel clumpy, but keep mixing until the spices are evenly distributed and the fries are gleaming orange.
- Add in the sesame seeds and toss again to combine, ensuring all fries are well coated.
- Transfer the fries to the parchment lined baking sheet and spread into an even layer. Scrape the bowl for any remaining sesame seeds and sprinkle them on top of the baking sheet.
- Bake fries in the oven for 25-30 minutes, or until lightly crispy and brown around the edges. Serve immediately with ketchup or dip of choice!
Notes
If oil-free, you can omit the avocado oil for varied results– note that the avocado oil helps the sesame seeds stick!
