Healthy Chocolate Frosty with real food ingredients and naturally sweetened with banana and dates. Perfect for a nutritious snack or dessert!
Hello and happy Monday!
I know we’re past the small talk and all, but I wanted to share with you that the weather here in Virginia has been fantastic the past few days.
Think temperatures in the low eighties with low humidity and lots of sunshine.
I call these good photography days because the sun beams into the studio and bounces off the hardwoods and dances around my latest eats on display.
This weekend, said eats weren’t on display very long before they got swiped up for slurping.
You’re going to love these Healthy Vegan Chocolate Frosty that are made with real food ingredients and naturally sweetened with zero added sugars!
No drive-through necessary to enjoy one– all you need is some frozen fruit, a blender, and plenty of cacao powder.
My Chocolate Frosty Era
I think everyone went through a Chocolate Frosty phase at some point in their life.
When was yours?
I used my wisdom teeth removal in high school as an excuse to get lots of free Frostys from mom and dad, because, what else is a girl to consume with a sore mouth and two teeth-sized craters?
A quick Google search told me that Wendy’s now offers a Vanilla Frosty, too, say WHAT?
For today’s purposes, though, we’re going to focus on the classic chocolate.
Friends, this is so much more than just a chocolate milkshake.
It’s a refined sugar-free treat packed with protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs decadently disguised by deliciousness.
What You Need to Make Healthy Vegan Chocolate Frosty
The recipe is loosely based on my favorite “shake” on the blog– my Tahini Date Shake.
The ingredients are easy:
- frozen ripe bananas
- cacao powder
- almond butter
- hemp hearts
- unsweetened almond milk
- pre-steamed and frozen cauliflower
- Medjool dates
- Hu Kitchen Gems
Frozen banana and cauliflower adds bulk to the shakes, almond butter adds smooth creaminess, and the combination of dates and frozen bananas sweeten the shake without any added sugar.
I do mostly banana-free shakes, because I’m sensitive to raw banana, but found that in these shakes banana is kind of perfect.
The frozen chunks add a bit of natural fat, sweetness, and bulk that helps keep these Frostys thick and creamy.
If you are avoiding bananas for whatever reason, try subbing extra pre-steamed frozen cauliflower or frozen berries for the bananas.
Swaps and Substitutions
Everything about these shakes is totally customizable so you get your perfect healthy Frosty straight from the blender.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- For thicker shakes, add a little more frozen cauliflower or ice.
- For thinner shakes, add a little more almond milk.
- For sweeter shakes, add another date.
- For lower sugar shakes, try swapping out bananas for frozen cauliflower
I recommend starting off with LESS almond milk and LESS dates, because you can always add more in, but it’s a little trickier to take away what’s already been, you know, blended.
You can also adjust your chocolate intensity by experimenting between 2-3 Tablespoons of raw cacao powder.
Try starting with 2 Tablespoons and adding more for a more intensely chocolate Frosty feel.
I also added a few Tablespoons of Hu Kitchen Chocolate Gems into the shake to enhance the chocolate flavor!
These chocolate chunk’s rich cocoa flavor with subtle caramel notes make them ideal to create that “chocolate malt” flavor that the classic Frosty does so well!
How to Serve Healthy Vegan Chocolate Frosty
This Healthy Vegan Chocolate Frosty is perfect for a nutritious dessert, snack, or even breakfast.
If you’re looking for even more protein, try adding a scoop or two of your favorite chocolate protein powder.
For a more decadent dessert feel, try topping the shake with coconut whipped cream and melted chocolate gems.
Depending on how thick your shakes are you can choose to enjoy them with either a spoon or a straw!
I usually end up spooning mine because I like my mixture so thick the blender blades stop all motion before it’s done.
The recipe below serves two, but you can easily cut it in half to make one serving.
Otherwise, blend up two and share with a friend.
Enjoy!
