My Avocado Mattress

October 8, 2019 By Flora & Vino Leave a Comment

I’m obsessed with my new vegan avocado mattress that is made safe, non-toxic, and eco-friendly with organic cotton and latex!

My Avocado Mattress by Flora & Vino

After my recent move I was on my friend’s blow up bed for nearly two weeks.

I got tired of sleeping on air fast, but it was definitely worth the wait because of what I was waiting for.

Guys, I was waiting to receive my Vegan Avocado Mattress delivery.

Yes, a vegan mattress that also happens to be eco-friendly and named after one of my favorite fruits.

When the delivery guys gingerly unfurled it onto the bed frame, I swooned.

I immediately fell in love with my new button-tufted mattress that reads AVOCADO in olive green stitching on the side.

A love that grew deeper when I plopped down for my first good night’s sleep in weeks.

I shared a bit about my decision to try an Avocado Mattress on Instagram and promised to share my thoughts in a post.

So, get comfy and let’s pillow-talk.

So, what is Avocado Mattress ?

I remember the first time I found out that my generic mattresses had some not very appealing things inside of them.

The knowledge made me want to chuck my Sears-sold mattress out the window, but after some targeted deep-breathing I decided to relax and research options.

When I first heard about Avocado Mattress from Instagram I knew I eventually wanted to have one of my own.

I was (and still am) so impressed and excited that an entirely green and vegan exists on the market today.

Their mission is to be the most respected source for organic and natural mattresses, pillows, and bedding at affordable prices!

And they do all of this while maintaining environmentally conscious, ethical, and sustainable business practices that improve our health and protect the planet.

The company was founded by husband and wife who were looking for a green and natural yet affordable mattress for their son.

And when they didn’t find one…they made one. And then lots.

And then one for me.

My brand new queen-sized avocado mattress was designed in Hoboken and handmade in California with organic certified, natural, and non-toxic materials.

Are Avocado Mattresses made from avocados?

A valid question, right?

Well, not exactly, although that does sound delicious.

What they are made of is some high quality stuff that I feel good about sleeping on.

The vegan mattress is a green and eco-conscious mattress with materials including:

  • GOLS organic certified latex
  • GOTS organic certified cotton
  • 1,414 pocketed support coils

Avocado Mattress offers both vegan and green mattresses, but I opted to go for the vegan certified and PETA approved vegan mattress that replaces wool with GOTS organic certified cotton.

So, what make Avocado Mattress special?

Avocado Mattress‘s mission is to provide us with a healthy sleep environment while promoting sustainability and social responsibility.

Here are some of the things that make them special:

  • MADE SAFE certified non-toxic
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified by UL Environment for low emissions
  • NO petroleum-based polyurethane foams
  • NO chemical flame retardants
  • As a Carbonfree® Partner they offset the emissions from factory and product shipping on an annual basis via carbon offsets purchased from Carbonfund

The mattress still meets all federal flammability requirements standards without any of the common chemical additives.

So, be honest, is a vegan and green mattress comfortable?

YES.

In my initial search for a better for you mattress, I assumed that I probably needed to sacrifice comfort for a safer product.

WRONG.

I can safely say that my Avocado Mattress is the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever owned.

You have the option to add an additional pillow top to your mattress, which I highly recommend.

The Euro pillow-top has 2 additional inches of plush organic latex for additional pressure relief and luxury.

I opted to get the pillow top for extra cushion after reading reviewers raving about it.

It has built in zoned back support with an internal support unit to keep you feeling well supported through your sweet dreams!

Along with my vegan mattress I also got two avocado pillows to complete the set that are soft, plump, and pliable.

Pro tip: you can adjust the “plumpness” of the pillows by unzipping and removing some of the cotton padding for an automatic thinner pillow!

Thinking of trying Avocado Mattress?

You should!

These eco-luxurious mattresses are super comfortable and affordable while supporting your health and the environment.

When you think about it, we spend a third of our lives in bed, so let’s make it the best experience possible.

Here are some reasons to check out Avocado Mattress:

  • 1-year sleep trial
  • Free shipping, free return pickups
  • 25-year warranty (that’s a lot of sleeps, peeps!)
  • Rated 5 stars by verified customers
  • Good for you
  • Good for the Planet
  • 1% revenue goes to to vetted nonprofits in an effort to address the interrelated issues of climate change, healthy food systems, land management, water resources, pollution and wildlife diversity.

This fall was the perfect timing for me to add a new mattress to my life, but if you’re not in a place to purchase a new bed just yet, that’s OK too.

This post is here to spread awareness about the awesome options and support to the brand that makes them possible.

XOXO Lauren

IMAGINE YOUR STUFF SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUST. 🤣 - T IMAGINE YOUR STUFF SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUST. 🤣
-
This weekend I tackled cleaning and organizing a closet that I’d been avoiding. 🚪
-
It’s a spacious closet in my spare bedroom. It’s also the first place I put things I rarely use, storage stuff, and items that don’t have a home. Basically, it’s a giant walk-in “junk” drawer.
-
Over time, it’s gotten so full I could hardly open the door without a stuffed animal falling from the top shelf or stepping on a prickly Christmas wreath.
-
“Out of sight, out of mind,” I reasoned, keeping the door tightly shut. But I could feel the weight of the things through the walls. The cluttered closet had a pulse, a heaviness, a resistance.
-
I was listening to @theminimalists podcast this week— the topic was letting go of “sentimental” stuff. They bluntly posed the question, “How would you feel if all of the stuff spontaneously combust?”
-
I thought about my closet, POOF, gone, in the blink of an eye. All of the things in there that I couldn’t even name, no longer my responsibility. Imagining all of that stuff taken from me in a catastrophe outside of my control, I felt relief.
-
While I’m glad my closet didn’t *actually* implode, my reaction to the exercise made me realize that I needed to let go of some things to make space in my house, my head, and my heart.
-
So Saturday I shuffled through old stuff, filled boxes to donate, and stuffed trash bags. I didn’t let go of all of it, but it felt like a big step towards lightness and freedom.
-
If you’ve been following me for a while you know that I’m on a constant journey towards a more minimalistic life. It’s a constant journey. I donate, I buy, I purge, I collect, I clutter, I minimize.
-
I strive for everything I own to either have a purpose or bring me immense joy, and how can any possession do either buried under junk behind a shut door?
-
Today, I can walk into the closet unscathed and actually *see* my old high school yearbooks, two guitars, and toolboxes filled with paints and pencils from art school.
-
Do you have a closet or space like this too? What have you been holding onto that you need to let go of this week? Please share!

CHICKPEA & WILD RICE SOUP is new on the blog today CHICKPEA & WILD RICE SOUP is new on the blog today. 🍲 Perfect for fickle spring weather that’s cold one minute and warm the next. I grew up eating cans of chicken and wild rice soup so this is a vegan and gluten-free tribute to the classic! This chickpea & wild rice soup packed with garbanzo beans, wild rice, and savory herbs in a light broth. It’s your new favorite veg-packed soup staple for all year round!
-
Did you know that most wild rice out there isn’t *real* wild rice? In this soup recipe, I used @edenfoods Wild Rice. //#sponsored This gluten-free whole grain is hand harvested by the Minnesota Leech Lake band of Ojibwe, Native Americans, by canoe! In learning more about wild rice production, I discovered that much of the wild rice sold isn’t authentic. *True* wild rice is Native American hand harvested from the wild by canoe, and is wood fire parched!
-
Authentic wild harvested wild rice ranges in color, cooks in only 25 to 30 minutes, is light and fluffy, and has a rich and delicious flavor, unlike the machine harvested stuff that’s black brown, chewy, and takes forever to cook. Outside of its great flavor, and texture, @edenfoods wild rice is rich in B3 and manganese and is a great source of fiber, B1, B2, magnesium, and zinc! It’s amazing added to this soup to keep everything thick and hearty.
