Funky PB&J protein shake with berries, nut butter, and beets! Perfect for busy mornings, they’re packed with protein and healthy fats!
Hi everyone!
I’m writing this blog post outside today (in February, I might add!) because it’s a gorgeous 75 degrees and sunny.
It really feels like little Punxsutawney Phil was wrong about this one, you guys.
All of the neighbors are outside walking their dogs in bright tank tops that they probably yanked out of storage just for today.
I don’t blame them. I’d dust off the blender if I hadn’t left it out all winter long…
Whether you’re basking in sunshine or trudging through a cold spell, you’re going to love my newest banana-free shake obsession.
These PBJ & B Shakes require only 5 minutes and 6 ingredients to start your day with a healthy dose of peanut butter and jelly, protein, and veg.
Psst.
PB&J called and told me they want a new buddy.
Maybe J was getting boring.
Maybe PB wasn’t who he used to be.
So, do you know who the notorious “B” is that spices things up?
…
Why, beets, of course!
(I did warn you that I was slightly obsessed)
You’re going to love the addition of steamed and frozen beets in this recipe.
The earthy and slightly sweet beets pair perfectly with juicy berries and savory peanut butter to add another layer of complexity to your PB&J cravings!
I can’t drink a PB&J shake sans beet, now, friends.
These shake are perfectly sweetened, with sweet beet-y undertones and a creamy peanut butter finish.
YUM.
Depending on my mood, I’ll either dump the Vitamin contents into a Weck jar and slurp as a shake or pour into a bowl with toppings to enjoy as a smoothie bowl.
To make this shake a smoothie bowl, add a little extra frozen fruit or cauliflower for a thicker texture.
Have you had your steaming and freezing party yet this week?
I always steam and freeze my beets in advance so I have them in the freezer waiting for me.
It’s a sad day when I open the freezer door to find that my stash is depleted.
(Note to self to check said stash, because this hasn’t happened to me in a while…)
Why steam them, you might ask?
Steaming the beets before freezing makes them easier to digest.
Also, I just think they taste better in this form cooked.
Like all of my shake and smoothie bowl recipes, this PBJ & B Shake is banana-free, because I find them easier on my gut.
If you love bananas and would like to add one to this shake, go for it!
I’d recommend subbing the 1/2 frozen banana for the 1/2 cup berries to keep the measurements similar.
I used a mixture of frozen strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries in my berry blend, but any berry variation goes!
Blackberries or cherries would work well here, too.
A note on color: For pinker shakes, use lighter berries, and for more purple coloring, stick to the darker berries.
Enjoy these PBJ & B Shakes for a quick and nutritious breakfast, snack, or pre/post-workout fuel.
I love to blend one up in the mornings after a workout, or for breakfast when there’s absolutely nothing left in the fridge.
The golden ticket is in the freezer, friends!
Try topping yours with more berries (I used freeze-fried) and more peanut butter to exaggerate the PB&J explosion, because, there is no such thing as too much PB&J.
…and B.
If you try these PBJ & B Shakes, let me know! I’d love to see how yours turned out!

Hi Lauren. This looks so yum! Do you steam the small beets whole then freeze whole? Thanks from Kathy
Hi Kathy! It’s soooo good! I peel and steam a small beet then freeze whole, yes. They blend up well with the rest of the ingredients! Hope you enjoy!
I made this this morning…even though I was scared s***less about using a beet! Of course because I am always mildly unprepared for all in life, all I had was frozen strawberries for the berry part, but it was still delicious and a pretty color! I also needed a shake since I was running out the door so just put 2 tbsp pb into the shake instead of fancy decorating it (and no freeze dried raspberries-sniff)-all totally worked and now I have a beet inside me! Whole Foods has pre-steamed ones so I could ease into this whole thing a little easier. Anyway loved this and love everything I have made on your site and LOVE Tone It Up protein powder! Hooray!

It totally works!!! It was just like you said…earthy! I can’t wait to see what I try next either! I’m very drawn to your smoothies and also your one-sheet pan recipes! Thank you again for everything!
Kelly– thank you for this feedback!!! I’m so glad you like both TOO because I always feel like the shakes and one pan meals are my least popular recipes but they’re ones I LOVE. 🙂

Wow! This smoothie was really good! It totally tastes like pb&j! It’s especially good when I’m trying not to eat processed sugar. The natural sweetness of the beet is perfect. I also used already prepared beets from Trader Joe’s. I omitted the protein powder and just added a bit of vanilla extract. Thank you! I’m saving this recipe! Can’t wait to try more smoothie recipes. They all look so pretty and i like that you experiment with different vegetables.
