Red velvet protein shake with frozen beet, banana, berries and cacao naturally sweetened with Fruit Bliss Organic Deglet Nour Dates.
By now, you might have heard that my big fitness goal for the year is practicing inversions.
I’m following a guided 2-week inversion training plan that I’m doing over, and over, and over.
It focuses on strengthening the muscles and getting the nervous system acquainted with the feeling of being upside down.
Just like we have to learn to walk, we also have to learn to stand on hands!
It’s a lot of planks, push ups, down dogs, kick-ups, and assists from the sliver of wall that doesn’t have any picture frames.
When I finish the practice my shoulders are shaking and my stomach is growling.
So I run to the kitchen and blend up something nourishing that I can enjoy quickly.
This Red Velvet Protein Shake is my latest obsession, and it’s the perfect way to nourish and care for yourself this February and the rest of the year.
This red velvet protein shake is made with frozen beet, banana, berries and cacao naturally sweetened with Fruit Bliss Organic Deglet Nour Dates.
Blend one up for a quick breakfast, snack, or even dessert!
What You Need to Make a Red Velvet Protein Shake
Here’s what you need to make the best Red Velvet Shake:
- unsweetened almond milk
- vanilla (or chocolate) protein powder
- raw cacao powder
- frozen banana
- frozen strawberries
- frozen beet
- Fruit Bliss Organic Deglet Nour Dates
That’s it!
What’s Inside
This shake is as good for you as it is delicious!
It’s packed with antioxidants, protein, and everything you need to love on yourself this February.
Beets add a slightly sweet earthly flavor and cacao powder adds rich chocolate flavor.
It’s naturally sweetened with banana and dates and berries.
The Berry Best
I tested *all* the different variations on this recipe to ensure that I’m giving you the best!
It’s packed with red berries, beet, and cacao for an undeniable “red velvet” feel.
I tested raspberries and cherries in place of strawberries.
While any red berry or cherry will work, I found that strawberries had the most neutral flavor.
How to Make a Red Velvet Protein Shake
This recipe is so easy to make in under 5 minutes!
I wish my handstand practice was that short and sweet.
And you can probably make it faster than me, because I’m lifting ingredients with shaky post- inversion arms.
So, here it is…
Add all of the ingredients to a high-speed blender and process until it’s smooth and creamy.
That’s it!
Date-Sweetened Shakes
Red Velvet needs adequate sweetness, because, it is, after all, a cake flavor!
This recipe is naturally sweetened with Fruit Bliss Organic Deglet Nour Dates!
These deglet nour dates are perfect in this shake because they’re super moist.
The secret to the juiciness of Fruit Bliss’s organic rehydrated fruit is…water!
They’re organic deglet nour dates are steamed and water-infused to make them soft and juicy.
They blend up easily in this shake to make a perfectly sweet yet refined-sugar-free shake.
Adjust the Sweetness
Before serving your shake, taste the mixture and add another optional date for a sweeter shake.
Fruit Bliss Organic Deglet Nour Dates are a bit smaller than Medjool dates, so you can customize your sweetness accordingly.
I like to add 2-3 to my shake for the perfect sweetness!
To serve, pour the blender contents into a glass.
I like to top mine with more cacao powder, cacao nibs, and any other toppings that sounds good.
Enjoy immediately!
How to Serve Your Red Velvet Protein Shake
Enjoy this Red Velvet Protein Shake as a delicious post workout meal, breakfast, or snack.
I love to sip on mine after my morning inversion training.
You can also make this protein shake a smoothie bowl by adding more frozen fruit or a little less almond milk.
Pour the mixture into a bowl and serve with all of your favorite toppings and eat with a spoon!
I only had vanilla protein powder on hand, but you can also use chocolate protein powder for this recipe to double up on the chocolate flavor.
Enjoy!

This looks so good. Would this work with beet root powder? Thank you!
Flora & Vino
Hi Erin!
You can try using beet powder, but you’ll need to add more frozen berries to get the shake the right consistency. And this will alter the flavor! Let me know if you try it.

Where did you get your glass and straw? They’re so cute.

2023 is the year of beets for me, which is why I was so excited to try this recipe! I used tofu as my protein source, and pomegranate molasses as my sweetener. Delicious! The only thing keeping me from giving the smoothie 5 stars is the fact that my smoothie was all sweet instead of sweet and savory.
