Delicious plant-based protein shake with creamy tahini and sweetened with dates and frozen bananas. Choose a vanilla or chocolate protein base!
Hi, how’s it going?
Lately I’ve been going back through the F&V archives, retesting and recreating some of my first ever recipes to make them new again.
I stumbled across this Tahini Date shake this past week and knew I had to recreate it for you, friend.
It’s hard to know when to share my protein shake recipes.
So many combinations, so little time, you know?
Honestly, I typically default to “don’t post” them because they seem, for lack of a better word, basic.
I mean, I know you know how to blend together some frozen fruit and milk!
This Tahini Date Shake, however, is some next level shaker-y.
Are you ready?
The first time I heard of pairing tahini and dates I know I twisted up my features in disgust.
This might surprise you, knowing how much I *love* and use tahini on regular basis now.
What You Need to Make Tahini Date Shakes
Here’s what you need:
- frozen banana
- steamed and frozen cauliflower
- almond milk
- plant-based protein powder
- hemp hearts
- cinnamon
- tahini
- Medjool dates
- raw cacao powder
That’s it!
How to Make Tahini Date Shakes
The tahini adds a creamy tanginess that is the perfect compliment to sweet Medjool dates.
You can control the sweetness here by editing your number of dates.
I usually go with one pitted date, but you can add up to two to achieve your perfect sweetness.
I fluffed it all up with frozen banana and a secret hidden vegetable: frozen cauliflower!
Pre-steamed and frozen cauliflower is an excellent low-sugar way to boost your shakes texture without adding more frozen fruit.
This is particularly useful for anyone watching their sugar intake.
I promise you don’t even taste the cauliflower!
If that doesn’t appeal to you, no worries!
Feel free to substitute the frozen cauliflower with another 1/2 of a frozen banana for sweeter shakes.
Swaps and Substitutions
Good news– you can control the consistency for this shake!
For thinner shakes, add more unsweetened almond milk.
To achieve thicker shakes, add less almond milk or more frozen banana of cauliflower to bulk it up.
You could even turn this Tahini Date Shake into a smoothie bowl by decreasing the liquid and increasing the frozen foods!
To serve, pour the mixture into a glass and serve immediately with a drizzle of tahini and a sprinkle of granola.
I love this shake because it transcends seasons.
It feels refreshing and light in the spring and summer and cozy and creamy enough to. drink by your space heater in the fall and winter.
How to Serve Tahini Date Shakes
Enjoy this Tahini Date Shake as an easy unique breakfast, snack, or even dessert.
I love to blend it up and slurp while still in yoga pants with my hair up after my morning workout.
It has all the nutrients you need to recharge after a workout!
Each sip is packed with complex carbs, healthy fats, and plant-based protein.
You can also enjoy it as a decadent breakfast, satiating snack, or healthy dessert.
Enjoy with or without cacao powder for an optional chocolate twist.
Hello, healthy milkshake!
Enjoy!

Hi Bea,
Yes, you can! I recommend using hemp hearts or maybe chia to add some bulk if you’d like some extra protein!
