Treat your pup to 1-ingredient sweet potato treats made with sliced sweet potato slow baked at low heat for a delicious homemade dog treat.
Back when I lived with Harper I used to spoil her with store-bought sweet potato dog chews that I brought home after shopping at Mom’s Organic Market.
I loved getting them because they had only one ingredient listed on the back: sweet potato!
The treats were crispy, dried, and faintly sweet smelling.
I never tried one, but I always imagined that Harper appreciated the minimal ingredients as much as her mom did.
Harper only knew ONE speed when it came to eating, and that was *fast*.
So, naturally, she devoured these sweet potato chews way faster than my shopping trips (and my wallet) could keep up with.
I vowed to make a homemade version for her and I’m finally delivering!
These Vegan Sweet Potato Dog Chews are made with just sweet potatoes sliced and slow-baked to chewy perfection.
This recipe requires only one ingredient: sweet potatoes!
Larger sweet potatoes are best for this recipe as the slices shrink down as they bake.
First, wash and scrub the sweet potatoes and slice off the ends.
Slice each potato into 1/3-inch slices lengthwise using a sharp knife or mandolin slicer.
Arrange the sweet potato slices on a parchment lined baking sheet so none of them are touching.
Don’t be alarmed by the looooong bake time on this recipe.
Once the sweet potatoes are sliced and baking you can go about your day without worry!
You only need to flip the sweet potatoes once during the cook time to ensure even baking.
The secret to getting the perfect crunchy texture for your pups is the bake the sweet potatoes at 200°F for 5-6 hours.
The sweet potatoes chews are done when they’re completely firm when picked up.
Remove sweet potato chews from the oven and allow to cool completely before storing.
They continue to harden as they cool!
These Vegan Sweet Potato Dog Chews are the perfect clean dog treat to spoil your dog!
They’re ideal to bake and gift for dog-lovers for birthdays, holidays, and anytime presents.
The chews will nourish your pup while simultaneously giving them a good teeth cleaning.
I mean, I wish I could clean my teeth with sweet potato…just saying.
Store leftover sweet potato dog chews in a sealed container for up to two weeks at room temperature.
To make more chews, simply slice and bake more sweet potatoes.
Enjoy!

Rather than the oven, could I use a dehydrator instead?
Hi Dawn,
That should work as well! However, I haven’t tested this so I can’t say how that would impact the bake time. Let me know if you try it and how it goes!

I wonder how long it would take if I use an air fryer instead. I don’t think my dad will appreciate it if I use up all the gas for baking haha
