Doggie Birthday Cake

The cutest doggie birthday cake for your four legged friend made with applesauce, oats, pumpkin, yogurt, and peanut butter.

Doggie Birthday Cake in cake pan with one piece missing and dog treats scattered

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost a year since I first stumbled across the picture of a Red Tri Australian Shepherd puppy.

And that two months later that puppy would become the rascal that we know and love called Flora.

Today is Flora’s first birthday!

As I write this post she’s doing her favorite new hobby that we call “neighborhood watch”.

We started opening the front door with the screen door shut after realizing that she *loves* to watch the neighborhood happenings.

Yes, she’s a watcher.

But she’s also a sassy, chaotic, and comical velociraptor.

And we love her in all of her chaos and and intensity.

Naturally, as a new dog mom, I wanted to spoil her with an actual cake for her bday instead of treats.

Something I’m not sure I’ve shared here is that Flora is a *very* picky eater.

We struggle to get her to eat dry food consistently and are mildly concerned that she seems to have survived the past year on a diet of training treats and bully sticks.

So it was a huge honor when Flora leaned in, sniffed her Doggie Birthday Cake, and actually ATE it.

This is the cutest doggie birthday cake for your four legged friends made with applesauce, oats, pumpkin, yogurt, and peanut butter.

It’s Flora approved and I hope your pup will approve too!

What You Need to Make Doggie Birthday Cake

I wanted to ensure that this cake is made only with dog-friendly ingredients that are natural and easy on their tummies.

Here’s what you need to make the cake:

  • oat flour
  • natural peanut butter
  • applesauce go with plain, unsweetened
  • pumpkin purée

That’s it!

Ensure that your peanut butter has 1 ingredient: peanuts!

You want to avoid xylitol, which is toxic for dogs.

Also avoid added oils and sugars that are common in shelf stable peanut butters.

How to Make Doggie Birthday Cake

This birthday cake is super easy to mix up and bake in any cake pan!

Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease an 8″ round pan or an 8”x8” square baking pan with coconut oil.

Add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl and mix everything well to combine.

Pour the mixture into the greased pan and smooth it into an even layer with the back of a spoon or spatula.

Bake the cake for about ~25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and starts to brown on the top and around the edges.

Allow the cake to cool completely before frosting.

What You Need to Make Frosting

What’s a cake without frosting?!

While Flora (and maybe your pup, too!) loves whipped cream, I wanted to make a healthier frosting for this cake.

The frosting has zero added sugar and is a mix of yogurt and peanut butter.

Here’s what you need to make the frosting:

  • plain Greek yogurt
  • peanut butter

That’s it!

WARNING: I don’t recommend using a vegan yogurt for this frosting as it has ingredients that might not be dog-safe.

If you prefer not to use dairy products, you can leave off the frosting or put plain peanut butter as frosting.

How to Make Dog Cake Frosting

While the cake cools, mix together the plain Greek yogurt and peanut butter until it’s smooth.

This is your cake frosting!

After the cake is cooled, spread the frosting on top of the cake in an even layer.

Toppings

This cake is dog heaven as is, but if you’d like to spoil your pup even further, feel free to add some decor.

Top the cake with optional dog treat “sprinkles” and serve immediately!

Try taking your dog’s favorite treats and crumbling them on top like confetti.

You can also take a few larger treats and stick them on the top to form a pattern.

Get as creative as you want!

Swaps and Substitutions

As I mentioned above, if your preference is to make a vegan cake for your dog, simply omit the frosting or use peanut butter alone.

Smashed banana can be substituted for applesauce if you’d like.

I don’t recommend using any flours outside of oat flour!

Note: You can make your own oat flour at home by pulsing old fashioned oats in the blender until it resembles a flour.

Pumpkin and applesauce can also be interchanged for each other if you’d like to make all pumpkin or all applesauce.

How to Serve Doggie Birthday Cake

To serve Flora her birthday cake, we cut triangular slices with a knife and plated them for her to enjoy.

The first evening I gave her the cake piece whole and she carried it around for a few minutes like a dog bone before scarfing it down.

After that, we opted to cut up the cake into little pieces so she made a little less of a mess.

She still got frosting and cake crumbs everywhere, but I have faith your pups will be a little cleaner than mine.

You’ll quickly figure out what kind of cake eater your dog friend it!

I loved having leftovers so she could enjoy a little portion to celebrate her birthday all week long!

The cake will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Enjoy!

    Hi Lauren,
What a fun idea. I love hearing about Flora and how much you adore her. I was wondering what ingredients may be in vegan yogurt that would not be safe for dogs?
