Five ingredient date sweetened chocolate hummus! Perfectly paired with apple chips, fresh fruit, or spread on toast for a sweet snack.

Date Sweetened Chocolate Hummus by Flora & Vino

Happy Saturday!

We’re out of town visiting my grandparents, and I spent the majority of the week packing to be away.

While I was packing, I was also snacking.

Amidst the packed and prepped one-pan meals and overnight oats is a tub of homemade chocolate hummus and a bag of apple chips.

I’m so excited to finally share my recipe for chocolate hummus with you, along with my favorite dipping partner!

You’re going to love this Date Sweetened Chocolate Hummus that requires only 5 ingredients and a totally healthy obsession with hummus.

Hummus can be dessert, too!

Ever since I saw that HOPE hummus, one of my favorite hummus brands, invented a chocolate hummus flavor, I haven’t been able to get the idea out of my head.

Chocolate. Hummus.

Roaming the refrigerated section in the grocery store, I searched for the small tub (whose packaging I totally had memorized for easy identification) with zero luck.

It’s not sold in my area. Boo.

I finally decided to make my own version that’s not only chocolate-y and crave able, but also oil-free and refined sugar-free.

Date Sweetened and Delicious.

This Date Sweetened Chocolate Hummus is mildly sweetened using gooey Medjool dates.

I like my chocolate hummus to have subtle sweetness so you can really taste the cacao and aren’t totally dissing the savory hummus gods.

If you want your hummus a little sweeter and more “dessert-y”, trying adding in a few more Medjool dates to satisfy your sweet tooth.

What to Pair with Chocolate Hummus

So, what the heck do you dip in chocolate hummus?

Well, let me tell you, friends.

While fruit is maybe the most popular answer and still a great option, I found that my favorite way to enjoy my Date Sweetened Chocolate Hummus was with apple chips!

A perfectly sweet and spiced vehicle for chocolate hummus consumption.

Bare Snacks Apple Chips

Try Them with Apple Chips

Bare Snacks has a new variation of Apple Chips that I’m totally obsessed with, called Apple Pie Spice.

They basically taste like apple pie filling with a crunch and without any additives.

Hello, favorite fall snack.

I love them because they also don’t have any added oils or sugars, making them the perfect dipping partner for this clean hummus!

How To Enjoy Date Sweetened Chocolate Hummus

This recipe makes about 2 cups of chocolate hummus, so you’ll have plenty to enjoy.

Just like regular hummus, this chocolate version is extremely versatile!

A spoonful of it really kicks those chocolate cravings while providing protein from chickpeas.

It’s not just for dessert, though.

Enjoy it with fresh fruit, spread onto crackers or toast, in oatmeal, on pancakes, or by the spoonful.

Description

Five ingredient date sweetened chocolate hummus! Perfectly paired with apple chips, fresh fruit, or spread on toast for a sweet snack.

Ingredients

  • 1 15-oz can garbanzo beans
  • 1/4 cup raw cacao powder
  • 8–10 gooey Medjool dates (+more for sweeter hummus)
  • 1/4 cup runny tahini
  • 1/4 cup almond milk (+ more in 1 TBSP increments to reach desired consistency)
  • Bare Snacks Apple Pie Spice Chips

Instructions

  1. Add the dates to a food processor or blender and pulse until you have a rough paste. If your dates are dried out, place them in a bowl of hot water and allow to sit for 5-10 minutes to soften, then drain and add to the recipe.
  2. Next, add the garbanzo beans, cacao powder, and runny tahini to the blender and pulse until everything is well combined, scraping down the sides as needed to recombine.
  3. Finally, add 1/4 cup almond milk and blend until the mixture is creamy and spreadable. Taste and add more dates for sweetness and more almond milk in 1 Tablespoon increments to thin out hummus consistency.
  4. Serve the hummus immediately with Bare Snacks Apple Pie Spice Chips.
  5. Transfer leftover hummus to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 weeks.

Thank you so much, I am going to make this yummy hummus tonight for an happy hour I am hosting at my place! I love your recipes, any advise for an always-on-the-go person on how to manage time to make space for more home-made cooking?

Hi Giulia! I hope you loved the hummus and I hope it was a hit at your happy hour! As for advise on how to make time for more home-cooking, I think scheduling in time to meal prep or prepare meals in advance would be helpful. I find if I don’t plan for it, a lot of times it doesn’t happen. I hope this helps! Home-cooking can be time-consuming but it’s so worth it! I have a lot of “one pan” meals on the blog that I love to use for busy weeks!

    Can you omit the tahini?

Hi there! If you omit the tahini the hummus will be very dry and crumbly without a creamy consistency. You could try substituting a nut butter instead, if you’re not a fan of tahini! Let me know what you end up using! XOXO

I’ve just made this fantastic hummus! And I Looove it! Thank you for sharing this incredible recipe <3
I used cashew butter instead of tahini, and deglet nour dates instead of medjool. And I have to admit it is eccellent. Next time I will try it with tahini, as I love the tahini-date and choc combo 🙂

This hummus was a little too good seeing as how I just had some off a spoon! My 2 & 4 year olds absolutely LOVED it on crackers. Super decadent, rich and creamy. I added a splash of vanilla to mine and a little extra flax milk to get a smooth consistency. Another fabulous recipe Lauren! Keep ‘em coming.

I have been trying to cut refined sugar and refined oil out of my diet, but the chocolate is hard. I LOVE this recipe! I made it with mung beans the other day–not too bad. But today I used Christmas Lima beans, which I had sprouted and booked with onion, garlic, celery and carrots. I added a bit of cinnamon, vanilla, and some chia seeds for texture. And I guess I put in a bit of homemade almond butter that needed a home. I love having the basic recipe, though, which can be varied endlessly. It’s like eating chocolate mousse or something, except with BEANS!!!??? And it’s filling. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this. Better than any chocolate hummus I’ve bought at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods!.

I was a little skeptical that chickpeas + dates + chocolate + seed butter would really make a worthwhile dip, but decided to give it a try based on this general recipe (didn’t measure). Total success!

LOVE this recipe! I’ve made it several times over the last 3 years. I’ve used several different types of nut butters and hazelnut has by far been the best crowd pleaser. It tastes like Nutella brownie batter. We have it on toast or used it as a fruit dip. Several friends have asked for the recipe, always happy to share this link.

I have made a similar recipe before using black beans and Costco nut and seed butter. With your recipe I swapped chickpeas for cannellini beans. It’s wonderful! I thought the tahini would have a flavour transfer but with the cocoa, the flavour balanced perfectly! Thank you!
