If you were to ask me what I was *most* passionate about in my business a few years back, I would have told you without hesitation: the photos. 
-
When I invested in my first DSLR camera I stayed up past midnight most nights watching food photography courses and practicing Lightroom techniques.
-
During the day I got behind the camera lens, squinting with one eye, crouching, stooping, AND standing on step stools to see food in new and unique ways.
-
It’s a funny thing when an intense passion becomes a content deliverable with a deadline. The euphoria I once felt when photographing my messy lunch was replaced by intense anxiety about the unpredictably fickle daylight.
-
This same passion slowly started to create a resistance within me, and I realized, with growing horror, that I didn’t want to take photos; that I was actually happier on days when I wasn’t shooting. 
-
Last year, amidst a global pandemic, a divorce, and a booming content calendar, I got to the point where I just could not take another photo. 
-
So, I asked for help. I hired a food photographer to support my content creation and creative vision. It was both terrifying and wonderful. 
-
For a long time I *really* struggled with this decision because so much of my identity both personally and professionally was tied up in those darn delicious photos. 
-
Questions consumed me. Who was I if I didn’t take pictures for my brand? What is my role for F&V now? Am I still an artist? 
-
The support forced my business outlook into more of a CEO perspective. It allowed me time and space to sign a cookbook deal, reclaim my personal life, and create more recipes. 
-
Today, I’m outsourcing almost 100% of my food photography for Flora & Vino. 
-
I think it’s OK and normal that our passions change over time. What started me out on this journey might not be what carries me forward. I take immense comfort in knowing that when I’m ready, my camera is waiting for me. 
-
Now, if you ask me what I’m most passionate about in business, I would probably tell you writing and connecting with you; the food photos are just a conduit. ❤️
