Blueberry Stovetop Oatmeal made brilliantly blue in 15 minutes. Top it off with your favorite nuts, dried fruit, and seeds.
Last weekend, I attended our Philosophy section of my 300 hr yoga teacher training program.
To prepare for the weekend, we read the entire Bhagavad Gita and answered a series of question prompts on identity, ethics, and right action.
If you haven’t read the Bhagavad Gita, it’s a part of an epic poem that takes place on a battlefield where the warrior king Arjuna converses with Lord Krishna.
The battlefield is a metaphor for life, and the lessons Krishna imparts on Arjuna are both powerful and very applicable to our modern society.
During the session, we shared our responses honestly and openly.
We identified our personal battlefield, narrowed in our dharma (duty), and started to understand our attachments and why they cause suffering.
I left the weekend, mind whirling with ideas, questions, and all of the tools to continue the practice of svadhyaya (self-study).
When prompted, I told the group that I felt that my dharma in this lifetime was to be a creator.
Whether it’s writing a post, photographing a recipe, styling a plate, or sequencing a yoga class, it’s all from the same energy.
I want to continually put love out onto my website, social media, the yoga studio, your email box; all of the avenues of connection.
My hope is that I start a ripple that somehow inspires right action in you, whether that’s to make a recipe, start yoga, eat more plants, or maybe just take a bubble bath.
Because if there’s one thing I learned this weekend it’s that we’re all connected.
I love the metaphor of us all being drops in the ocean, all a part of the collective whole.
So, thanks for being a part of my collective, friend!
And now, after my philosophy rant, I have a new recipe for you that is beautiful, nourishing, and seasonal.
This Blueberry Stovetop Oatmeal is made brilliantly blue in 15 minutes.
Top it off with your favorite nuts, dried fruit, and seeds for a fun breakfast for any season!
What You Need to Make Blueberry Stovetop Oatmeal
This recipe is versatile and easy to make with ingredients your probably already have on hand.
And it’s a great way to use up an excess of blueberries this season!
Here’s what you need to make blue oatmeal:
- gluten-free old fashioned rolled oats
- filtered water
- frozen wild blueberries
- pure maple syrup
That’s it!
How to Make Blueberry Stovetop Oatmeal
These oats are easy to make in ~15 minutes on the stovetop in one saucepan.
Add the oats, unsweetened almond milk, and frozen blueberries to a small saucepan over medium-high heat.
Bring the mixture to a low boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook the oats for 10-15 minutes.
Stir the mixture frequently to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
Add a splash of almond milk or filtered water if the mixture gets too dry.
In the last few minutes, stir in the optional maple syrup.
Swaps and Substitutions
I opted to use filtered water for this recipe instead of almond milk because I found that it made the blue color from the berries pop more!
For creamier oatmeal, you can substitute any plant based milk instead of water.
Normally, I add a splash of almond at the end for some creaminess.
I used frozen wild blueberries in these oats because frozen berries typically lead to a more intense color.
You can use fresh or frozen blueberries for this recipe.
If you use fresh blueberries, you may need to smash them down a bit to get them to release their juices.
Or, you can use another berry entirely to switch up the flavor profile, like raspberries or blackberries.
Toppings for Blueberry Stovetop Oatmeal
Now that your Blueberry Stovetop Oatmeal is cooked and ready for serving, let’s add some toppings!
Here’s what I used:
- mixed nuts
- dried fruit
- granola
- unsweetened shredded coconut
I also added some fresh blueberries on top for a splash of color post-cooking.
However, anything goes here, so add your favorites!
How to Serve Blueberry Stovetop Oatmeal
Serve the oats warm in a bowl and top with mixed nuts, dried fruit, granola, and unsweetened shredded coconut.
Fresh berries make for a nice pop of color, too!
If you’d like to make multiple servings, try doubling or tripling the recipe.
You can also make this recipe and store leftovers in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
To reheat meal-prepped hot oats, add a bit of almond milk and microwave them for 30-60 seconds.
Stir them up until they’re warm and creamy, then add your favorite toppings and serve.
Enjoy!
