“Cheesy” Vegan Popcorn made with organic popcorn kernels, nutritional yeast, and garlic powder. The perfect healthy snack for movie night!
One of my besties and I have frequent virtual movie nights where we start films at the same time and watch separately but together.
Kind of like Netflix Party but way cooler because…we create the party.
“3, 2, 1, GO!” we type furiously vix text message and quickly jab the PLAY button from different states.
We sit down with wine and snacks and half-watch half-talk through the movie plot.
There’s something so cozy and comforting about co-watching something at the same, even from a distance.
And what better snack to cozy up to than a plant-based popcorn?
I’ve decided that we need this “Cheesy” Vegan Popcorn for our next movie night.
If you try it, you might never buy store-bought popcorn again!
After spending the better part of my current professional life in my kitchen, there are few scenarios that scare me.
Cutting a big-ass spaghetti squash? Cool.
Flipping the perfect pancakes? Nailed it.
Blending a boiling soup? No problem.
However, this week, I made M promise to hang out nearby while I made popcorn for the first time.
I didn’t know what to expect, but I imagined it ending with popcorn raining down on me in problematic pops.
What I didn’t expect was how incredibly easy and delicious it was to make!
Why Make Your Own Popcorn
So, why make your own popcorn?
- It’s more sustainable
- You can control the ingredients
- You can make as much or little as you want!
- Try new flavor combos, like this one!
Let’s do it!
What You Need to Make “Cheesy” Vegan Popcorn
Here’s what you need:
- Eden Foods Olive Oil
- Eden Foods Organic Popcorn
- Himalayan sea salt
- garlic powder
- ground turmeric
- paprika powder
- nutritional yeast
That’s it!
Eden Foods Organic Popcorn
First, we start with Eden Foods Organic Popcorn.
This organic yellow popcorn is naturally low-fat and gluten-free.
Eden Foods Organic Popcorn contains no chemical additives, preservatives, pesticides, herbicides, or anything gross.
And, while it’s totally pop-able, it’s POPs-free (persistent organic pollutants), so you can trust each kernel to be natural and high-quality.
It makes for a healthy snack packed with whole-grains and fiber.
Did you know that popcorn contains good-for-you antioxidants called polyphenols that remove harmful toxins, called free radicals?
This popcorn makes the biggest, fluffiest, and puffiest popcorn!
A half-cup serving (like the recipe below) produces about 16 cups of perfectly popped corn.
It’s extremely versatile and practically begging to be coated in your favorite seasonings.
I also think it would make the perfect gift, popped or un-popped, for a popcorn lover in your life!
How to Make “Cheesy” Vegan Popcorn
To make your own popcorn, you need a large pot with a lid.
First, heat the oil in the pot and a few kernels of popcorn, covered, over medium heat until all of the kernels pop.
I chose to pop mine in Eden Foods Olive Oil, a delicious oil extracted from cold-pressed olives!
Pour in the remaining kernels, then cover the pot again and shake it to distribute the oil over the remaining popcorn kernels.
The popcorn should start popping rapidly, but that’s cool because you have a lid to catch all of the goodness!
As the popcorn pops, shake the pan occasionally until the popping slows to 1-2 seconds between pops.
Remove the pot from the heat immediately and open the lid slightly to allow the hot steam to release.
Be careful not to burn yourself on the steam!
Pour the popcorn into a large bowl and remove any kernels that are partially popped or un-popped!
The Best Seasoning for “Cheesy” Vegan Popcorn
Now you’re ready for seasonings!
M and I tested savory and sweet popcorn recipes, but the savory won us over in the end.
Remember those big popcorn canisters you received for the holidays with different popcorn flavors?
Well, I went for the Cheese flavor over the caramel or chocolate any day.
I have to credit M for this seasoning combo, because he instinctively went for a salt, nutritional yeast, and garlic combo.
After one kernel I was hooked.
I added in some turmeric and paprika for color, and voila, better than movie-theater popcorn.
To season your popcorn, add the salt, garlic powder, turmeric, paprika, and nutritional yeast to a small bowl and toss it to combine.
Shake the spice mixture over the popcorn and then toss it with your hands or a spoon to evenly distribute it.
Now start the movie and dig in!
