We’re gearing up here at F&V to host M’s family from Germany for the holiday season. Now that we have Flora (our Australian Shepherd), taking long international trips becomes all the more challenging. We’ve usually alternated on and off years to spend Christmas here with my family and in Germany with Marco’s family. This year was a “Germany” year, but, when you can’t bring yourself to Germany…bring Germany to you! (That’s what they say, right?!) I’m excited to spend the holidays showing them some of my favorite American traditions for Christmas and New Years just as they have shared their German traditions with me over the years. I got the “Christmas box” out before Thanksgiving and will be put a lot more time and thought into decorating this year since we’ll be hosting!

I also started my gift list early, because I have so many ideas! Here are a few of my favorite 2025 discoveries that I want to share with you this year!. This is our first Christmas with the new pup, so we’re skipping travel this year and making memories at home with her. Since I’ve met M, we’ve been spending every other year Christmas in Germany. While holiday travel is so special and exciting, I’m equally excited to do…nothing this year. I’m looking forward to getting a Christmas tree and filling the base with all of the wrapped gifts I’m currently stashing in my photography closet!

Apple Pie Crumble Bars

I *love* apples, mostly because I can let them sit on the counter for a while and ponder delicious ways to use them.

They’re not fickle like summer berries, where you need to use them THE DAY you purchase them.

Or like Flora’s leash training, which some days feels easy and other days (read: most of the time) I think she’s the one walking me. 

But, I digress.

We were talking apples, not Aussies! 

One of M’s favorite recipes that I make this time of year is a vegan apple crumble.

It’s also one of my favorite ways to use up a bunch of apples that I got at the grocery store, farmers market, or apple orchard. This year, I decided to get a bit creative and turn his favorite apple recipe into…bars! 

These Apple Pie Crumble Bars are made with an almond oat crust and crumble topping with a stovetop apple pie filling.

It’s still easy to make with simple ingredients, but crumble turned bars means they’re portable, concise, and convenient. 

Slice them into squares and enjoy them for the *best* fall breakfast, snack, or dessert.

Happy happy holidays, friends! This time last year I was preparing for my first trip to Germany to meet all of M’s family and friends. This year we’re staying in the states to spend the holiday with my family and our friends here. So this is actually our first Christmas in Maryland, and I’m excited to decorate and deck the halls in a new space. Love is in the air.

And when I say in the air I actually mean in my kitchen.

There’s a mound of freshly made chocolate truffles sitting neatly on a plate just within my reach.

They were a huge hit last weekend when I experimented with them for my dad’s birthday, so I knew I had to make them again for Valentine’s Day.

If life is like a box of chocolates, I really hope it’s like these 4-Ingredient “Superseed” Chocolate Truffles!
