Chocolate cherry smoothie bowl with almond milk, frozen cherries, berries, chocolate protein powder, raw cacao, and plenty of sweet toppings!

Chocolate Cherry Smoothie Bowl served in bowls with spoons topped with cherries, cacao nibs, shredded coconut, and granola with a spoon surrounded by toppings

I kind of feel like a nomad right now, friends.

Because we’re in the process of showing and selling out home, I’ve been working out of the house almost every day.

This means I haven’t had much time to be creative in the kitchen, and breakfast is really the only meal I make and eat at home.

I was just saying on Instagram how it’s been a second since I shared a breakfast post with you.

So…here’s what’s been happening here lately.

If there’s one thing that’s making me feel at home, it’s whipping up a Chocolate Cherry Smoothie Bowl.

This delicious breakfast bowl is packed with protein, fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats that you can blend up in five minutes!

I’ve been blending up in variations of this Chocolate Cherry Smoothie Bowl since 2017!

As I don’t tolerate raw bananas swell in my smoothie bowls, I started relying on frozen cherries to add subtle sweetness to my smoothie bowls.

Until, suddenly, the cherries and chocolate stole the show.

My favorite recipe below calls for frozen berries, cherries, unsweetened almond milk, raw cacao powder, chocolate protein powder, and avocado.

I threw in an optional frozen beet for color and nutrition because I think the earthiness of red beets balances out the sweet cherries!

The result is a thick and creamy smoothie bowl that tastes like dessert but is here for your breakfast.

What You Need to Make Chocolate Cherry Smoothie Bowl

Here’s what you need to make a Chocolate Cherry Smoothie Bowl:

  • unsweetened almond milk
  • frozen cherries
  • frozen berries
  • frozen beet
  • chocolate protein powder
  • raw cacao powder
  • avocado

That’s it!

Fruit Bliss Tart Cherries surrounded by fresh cherries

How to Make Chocolate Cherry Smoothie Bowl

Add the almond milk, frozen cherries, frozen berries, optional chocolate protein powder, cacao powder, and avocado to a high speed blender.

Process everything until it’s smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides as needed to recombine.

As with all smoothie bowls, it’s always better to start off with less liquid and add more as needed to reach your desired consistency.

You want the smoothie bowl to be thick and creamy; not icy or watery!

Add a little more frozen fruit or a more almond milk to adjust the mix accordingly.

Toppings for Chocolate Cherry Smoothie Bowl

Transfer to a bowl and top with your favorite toppings.

For toppings to this bowl, I went with echoes of cherry and chocolate with a hint of coconut.

My favorites are cacao nibs, fresh pitted sliced cherries, tart dried cherries, granola, and unsweetened shredded coconut.

Some other ideas are crushed nuts, seeds, nut butter, and fresh berries.

Fruit Bliss Tart Cherries

This weekend at the store I found the most gorgeous bunch of fresh cherries.

Almost as gorgeous as Fruit Bliss’s Soft & Juicy Tart Cherries that are organic, dried, and pitted!

I say “dried” rather loosely, because these cherries are anything but dry.

They’re packed in water to rehydrate them so they’re a sweet snack.

Or, in our case, a sweet smoothie bowl topping.

How to Serve Chocolate Cherry Smoothie Bowl

This Chocolate Cherry Smoothie Bowl (Banana-Free) is perfect for summer-time cherry season!

Try it for a post workout meal, decadent breakfast, or protein-packed snack.

You can easily make this smoothie bowl any time of year with frozen ingredients!

I love adding a handful of frozen spinach to the mix for an extra boost of leafy green nutrients.

If you don’t love adding avocado, try substituting a spoonful of nut or seed butter instead for instant creaminess and healthy fats.

I like to add lighter berries here for a prettier color, but blueberries and blackberries are welcome here, too!

Enjoy!

      Hi Lisa!

I have an intolerance to raw bananas (they make me a bit sick!) so I like to provide banana-free recipes or anyone else that has the same problem or is looking for lower sugar options! Thanks for the feedback, Lisa!!!

Hi! I made this today sans beet (but I bought them and they are ready to use) and it was amazing!! The key is a good chocolate protein powder. I would love to know what you use! So many are so sweet! I tried the Vega one today and it worked well! Anyway thank you for this amazing recipe. I love sneaking in avocado and banana-free recipes-they can be too filling sometimes! This has amazing chocolate cherry flavor.

Hi Kelly! So glad you were able to try this!!! You’re going to love it with beets, too. For chocolate protein powder I’m currently using Tone It Up Chocolate or Aloha Chocolate. I’ve also heard good things about Nuzest! Hope this helps!
