Who were you when you were young?

Growing up, I was always the cute one, the nice one, the girl next door.

I was the girl that you could count on showing up to your house with homemade cookies and three different movie options to match your mood.

Coincidentally, it wasn’t until my mid-20’s that I realized that much of my grown-up woman identity was precariously built on this idea of being that sweet little girl.

It’s funny– I didn’t like it then–I always wanted to be a little more unpredictable with sharper edges.

When you read this post it’ll probably be my birthday–and guys; I’m not 17 anymore.

But you know what is still super cute, little, and sweet?

After Dan goes to bed he sometimes leaves a savory snack behind, a half empty bowl of pretzels or a cheez-its to commemorate the night.

My snacking, on the other hand, rarely leaves behind any crumbs, especially where these Vegan Tahini “Cheez-Its” are concerned.

These are salty buttery yellow squares baked to crispy perfection are my new plant-based, oil-free, and gluten-free obsession.

They’re totally “cheezy” without any added cheese– intrigued?

Ah, cheesy snacking crackers.

My parents never bought Cheetos, even though I devoured them greedily with orange stained fingers at friends’ houses.

We did have Cheez-Its on hand occasionally, though, for some seriously savory snacking.

I never liked chips (really!), but I could go for a good Cheez-It every now and then.

I’m not sure exactly how we got to half way through March, but here we are.

Some big things happen in March, like my little sister’s birthday, the first day of Spring, and Saint Patty’s Day.

Ever since Expo West I’ve been craving all things green, which is totally on-brand because I’ve got the whole spring green thing playing in my favor.

I’m home.

My bulging carry-on was promptly flagged for a search at the security checkpoint at LAX on the way home to VA.

The officer doing the searching laughed incredulously when he unzipped my suitcase to find heaps of bars, bites, and snacks from Expo West.

“Munchies,” he said over and over, smirking. “Can’t argue with that.”

I tried to explain that I had just been at a food conference, feeling mildly defensive like I needed to explain myself and my bushel of bars.

But really, does one ever need to explain traveling with precious delicious cargo?

When we got home, I had every energy bar not yet sold in stores but I didn’t have a simple jar of peanut butter, so I decided to make my own.

I love them bowled on the granite counter, bright smiley face yellow, as if ready to be captured in a still life painting.

I love muddling a wedge into water when water is the last thing you want to drink.

I love to big squeeze 1/2 of one all over my vegetables with runny tahini for the quickest (and best) DIY dressing.

I also really love them in these Lemon Poppyseed Muffins with Coconut Butter Glaze.

This week I rejoined my gym and it sort of felt like I was being disloyal to my yoga studio when I signed the paperwork to make my membership official.

Now I find myself in a sort of gym/yoga limbo, unsure of which class to go to after the studio is tidied up and the dishwasher is full.

Can I just do it all?

I did my first weight-training (BodyPump!) class tonight in over a year and it felt good to push and pull things other than my camera equipment and the free-weights upstairs.

Getting back in the training zone reminded me of one of my absolute favorite pre/post workout treats– stuffed dates.

Relationship status: My taste buds and I are kind of broken up.

It’s definitely them and not me– it’s like they’ve gone on sensory strike after being overworked and exhausted.

I’ve just felt a little off lately, the usual *go to* foods sounding less than appealing.

Last night I pushed the mound of asparagus aside and couldn’t fathom forking the spears and eating them.

Which is I why I practically force-fed this recipe to Dan, asking for his most critical feedback.

Happy New Year!!!

My favorite cake growing up was yellow with chocolate frosting.

Arguably the best part of the cake, pillowy yellow insides aside, was the homemade chocolate frosting that my mom made to top it.

It was rich, chocolately, and creamy, the kind of frosting you lick the mixers clean of before releasing them into sudsy water.

When we had extra, my mom spread thick layers of the stuff on cinnamon graham crackers for snacking.

If you’ve never had frosting on graham crackers, you’re going to love this recipe.

This Thai Carrot Sweet Potato Soup is made on the stovetop with root vegetables and yellow curry paste blended with a spoonful of nut butter. I used a standing blender but you can also use an immersion blender to achieve the creamiest consistency.

Whether you love TFK as much as I do, you’re going to be obsessed with my version of this cauliflower! It’s baked and then coated in a tahini sauce and topped with fresh herbs, cranberries, and hazelnuts. Enjoy it as an appetizer or side! Cozy and delicious all year round.
